The Sights of Yosemite

Since the sheer seize of Yosemite National Park (it covers nearly 1,200 square miles) can be a bit overwhelming upon first glance, here are a few of the attractions that you absolutely must-see on your next trip to California’s Sierra Nevada.

Yosemite Valley: While only comprising a small portion of the park, this area is home to the granite behemoth El Capitan, impressive waterfalls such as Yosemite Falls, the famous Half Dome, and the towering Cathedral Rocks and Spires. Hiking, rock climbing, and walking are all popular in this region, as is wildlife viewing.

Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias: About an hour’s drive south of Yosemite Valley lies Wawona, home of the largest grove of Sierra redwoods. There are also two other groves near Crane Flat, Tuolumne and Merced, but they are smaller and less visited since there is no road access (don’t forget your hiking boots).

Glacier Point & Badger Pass: Located about 30 miles from Yosemite Valley, this is one of the best places to catch a bird’s eye view of Half Dome, three waterfalls, the Valley, and the High Sierra. Although the road is closed from December through early April, winter visitors can reach the Badger Pass ski area and Glacier Point on snowshoes or skis.

Hetch Hetchy: Although not as widely known as its twin Yosemite Valley, this area features breathtaking scenery and a variety of less frequented trails that are great for escaping the crowds.

Best Trails: Branching out from the famous John Muir Trail, the 3-mile Mist Trail is slightly demanding but well worth the effort for its picturesque views, refreshing spray, and smooth granite beaches. Other trails to check out during your visit include the easy Lower Yosemite Falls walk, the moderate Sentinel Dome and Taft Point hike, and the strenuous Panorama Trail.
