Sanibel Island: Seashells and Surprises
Not to diminish the reputation of any other Florida destination, but there’s something undeniably special about Sanibel Island. From its unique barrier island position to the unshakable good vibes emanating from every beach house and condo in the area, this vacation spot sets itself apart in a very good way.
Even people who’ve never visited Sanibel & Captiva before probably associate this region with hunting for seashells. The island acts as a veritable scoop for all things conch and sand dollar related, so prepare to spend a good few hours hunched over, seeking out the perfect treasure to marvel at by the light of the warm Florida sun.
Other things to do include swimming, surfing, golfing, bicycling, shopping and water skiing. Being on an island doesn’t mean giving up mainland conveniences, so expect to eat well, have fun and stay engaged throughout your getaway, even if you decide to forego any day trips.
An excursion to another of South Central Gulf Coast Florida’s sweet spots or even a farther favorite like Disney/Orlando or Busch Gardens will require a little bit of driving, but it’s nothing that will deter a determined traveler. The city of Fort Myers is within sight, located just across the waterway, so a super quick trip to a larger town is no big deal. It wouldn’t be strange for you to end up staying close to your rented abode, though, relaxing by the pool or cooking up a casual meal featuring the fresh catch of the day and a few festive accents - maybe cocktails and Key Lime pie.
You’re in Florida, so live it up, and be sure to relish all the unique qualities of this particular region. J.N. “Ding Darling” National Wildlife Refuge and Bird Sanctuary, friendly faces everywhere you go, and yes, lots and lots of seashells will keep you enthralled for days.
Sanibel Island is like no other, and its door is always open if you feel like putting this claim to the test.
