Fornells and Fornells Bay: Fornells is a village at the mouth of the protected Fornells bay, 3 miles away, with a most attractive palm tree-lined harbour, mainly used by the local fishermen. It has various souvenir and other shops and excellent restaurants, most of which face onto the harbour or the bay. The king of Spain has been known to visit, sometimes eating at the waterfront Es Pla restaurant. You can visit the C19th British-built watchtower by the cliffs to the North. The bay is some 3 miles by 1.5 miles and is an excellent, safe location for motor-boating, sailing and windsurfing, all of which are available for casual hire. Courses can be booked in advance. The bay is a popular destination for sailing and motor yachts. Recent guest comments: “The apartment was a delight…” “We loved the waterfront position...You did very well finding an apartment in such a lovely position.'
Other towns to visit: Mercadal is an interesting local town nestling below Monte Toro, which, at 1,000ft, is the highest point on the Island and which has superb viewpoints and a café, and which you can see from our balcony. Mahon is the capital of the island and is 15m away. It has excellent shops, a cathedral, gin factory and one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Harbour boat trips available. Ciudadela is 20m away and is a beautiful port of Moorish design looking towards Majorca. It has spacious squares, elegant buildings, a cathedral, excellent shops and numerous harbour-side restaurants.
Other activities: There are lots of very good walks in the island. Bird watching is apparently very good. We often see pairs of cormorants fishing below our balcony first thing in the morning, as well as various varieties of seagull, red kites and sea eagles. With a car you can access the following activities within a 20 minutes drive: go-carting, trampolining, horse riding lessons and waterslides. There are over 100 beaches on this small island, many of which are accessible by car. A comment from an Italian family who spent two weeks in August 2008: “… the holiday in Menorca has been beautiful and also your house has been very comfortable and with a wonderful quiet and view.”
