Alonissos Island: Lying off the Eastern coast of mainland Greece in crystal clear turquoise waters, the 11 Sporades Islands are densely wooded and mountainous. Alonissos is one of only 4 inhabited islands in the group, and the only inhabited island in the marine conservation area. The seas surrounding Alonissos are considered to be the cleanest in the Aegean and amongst the cleanest and bluest to be experienced anywhere. Alonissos has a large and picturesque area of protected forest. A lush mix of dense, scented pine, evergreen oak and a variety of fruit trees and bushes, it has been a walkers paradise for many years. Walking guides describe numerous walks across and around the island varying in length from 7 to 14 kilometres. In 1992 a National Marine Park was established in Alonissos and surrounding islands.
Sailing & Diving: Sailing conditions around the Sporades are ideal with many interesting islands to be discovered. Some of the smaller uninhabited islands offer safe anchorage and secluded coves for swimming and fishing. The close proximity of these islands make this area a perfect place for short excursions. Yachts may be chartered from Alonissos, Skopelos and Skiathos. The two recently established diving schools in Steni Vala and Patiri, enable the exploration of unrestricted areas of the Marine Park. The sea bed is rich with sea grass meadows, sponges and coral, and is among the richest in shipwrecks dating back as far as 5th century B.C. The area around Alonissos and Skopelos has the second largest concentration of ancient and middle aged wrecks in the world, the most famous being off the coast of Peristera island adjacent to Alonissos. Alonissos is home to the internationally acclaimed centre of classical homoeopathy founded and ran by the renowned homoeopath George Vithoulkas.
