Family and Child Activities: We are a family friendly property offering outside trampoline, swing and slide, children's DVDs and indoor games. Our property offers all child and toddler needs. We also have a lake for fishing in which we also swim in the clean, warm spring-fed water. We are 2km from Lac de Gurson - the family oriented lakes and beaches resort. We also offer chambres d'hotes (Bed and Breakfast).
Romance, Vineyards and Fine Cuisine: Our property is a wine château. Although we no longer make wine, there are plenty of quality vineyards around us that will offer you wine tasting and invite you to see how it is all made. Try the moelleux (semi-sweet) wines of the area, a wonderful aperitif and delicious with some of our walnuts. There are also dry whites and wonderful reds in nearby Cote de Francs and St Emilion with many vineyards available to visit. Bring the car and stock up on excellent wines at a fraction of UK prices. Or simply enjoy a romantic break exploring the vineyards, monuments or long walks and cycle rides. This is the France the World thinks of - wonderful food, wine and relaxation.
History: The village of Villefranche de Lonchat was built by Edward I as a walled town (bastide) in 1280. The whole area was central to the Hundred Years War between the French and English that was eventually decided at the Battle of Castillon in 1453 a few kilometres from us. Castillon hosts a spectacular re-enactment of the battle nightly during the Summer with a display of skilled horsemen and all round family fun. Our 'butte' (mound) on top of the hill is surrounded in stone on levels atop of which is the old fortress, now a ruin, with secret passage ways. It offered a watch tower for enemy movements to and from Castillon, westwards to Bordeaux and east to Bergerac as well as being host to resident troops. Views from the hill are to villages including Villefranche and its wonderful Romanesque church from the 11th century The local villages date from the same period and earlier with Roman artefacts and structures to be seen. The Romans in fact introduced vines to this region.
