John D. Rockefeller, Sr. Wintered in Ormond Beach: The Rockefeller winter home, The Casements, is located in the City of Ormond Beach. He chose Ormond Beach because of the pleasant year-round climate, the races on the beach, the near-by golf course, and the beautiful Halifax River at his doorstep. He found friendly people, and was visited by celebrities. Rockefeller died in The Casements in 1937, 2 years shy of his 100th birthday. Ormond Beach has all of the services of a large metropolitan area (hospitals, minor league baseball, symphonies, airports, world renown events), yet it offers many activities enjoyed by people who relish a small town atmosphere where everything is conveniently located...and NO TRAFFIC JAMS. Its a resort town with many recreational opportunities. It has beautiful tree-covered back roads. Birds, armadillos, bear, deer and other wildlife abound in areas protected by the Florida State Parks Department.
