Port Alberni: The word 'shelter' is not one generally associated with Vancouver Island's tempestuous West Coast. However, Port Alberni is a unique windward port that does offer shelter from West Coast storms. As a west coast port it accesses the Pacific Ocean through Barkley Sound and the Alberni Inlet at which Port Alberni is at the Inlet's eastern end. Built originally on the success of the forest and fishing industries, Port Alberni is now diversifying into tourism. This 'Gateway to the Pacific' offers some of British Columbia's finest recreational and cultural attractions. Salt and Fresh water fishing is excellent, the harbor still has an active commercial fishing fleet. Port Alberni is also a staging area for hiking, paddling, kayaking, scuba diving, wildlife viewing, windsurfing, boating, golfing and surfing. Cultural attractions include the Alberni Valley Museum, showcasing West Coast Native art, the Maritime Discovery Centre, Steam Train and the McLean Mill National Historic Site.
