Kailua Kona Is Fit for a King

Once upon a time this was the capital of Hawaii and the home of King Kamehameha I. Amazing sunset views, incomparable beaches and some of the best weather around made it the hub of culture and activity on the Big Island, and today Kailua Kona retains a sense of being a gathering place worthy of royalty.

Taking in the various historical sites is made easy thanks to a pedestrian-friendly main street, and the seawall and pier offer excellent views of the ocean. Every year the Ironman Triathlon starts right here when tough competitors plunge into the waves and complete a 2.4 mile open water swim, and the very same coastline is also accessible to more relaxing pursuits, like fishing, snorkeling, diving and surfing, any day of the week.

Hulihe’e Palace, Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens and Ahu’ena Heiau (a religious site with statues and guided tours) are a few reasons that this western town continues to be a popular tourist destination, and don’t forget about the excellent shopping and dining that will add a modern and convenient twist to the traditional foundation of this very likable place to visit.

Another thing to love about virtually any Hawaiian vacation spot is that you are within easy reach of about a million things to do. The city, the beach and acres of volcanic, forested or desert-like wilderness are all up for grabs thanks to hundreds of well-placed vacation villas, condos and beach houses.
