Further details about this estate rental
Wai 'Opae Marine Protected Tide Pools: Hale Palama is a short 3 block stroll to the Wai’Opae Tide Pools, a protected natural marine reserve. Discover amazing oceanic flora and fauna and experience the serenity of swimming through schools of colorful Hawaiian reef fish in their natural environment. The Tide Pools are a series of large interconnected thermal tide pools, which sometimes extend up to 200 yards out into the ocean. Some of the pools are on private property, where the residents use them as 'natural' hot tubs. Usually the pools are not crowded and calm. The Kapoho tide pools are excellent for sunbathing and deep enough for swimming and snorkeling.
Ahalanui Park (Warm Ponds): Ahalanui Park is a short 5 minute drive from Hale Palama. Even though the thermal pool in Ahalanui Park has a little connection to the ocean, it is not a tide pool. and is entirely spring-fed. This pond is geothermally heated and combined with the ocean water becomes the perfect warm temperature for a relaxing swim. Fish sometimes access the pool from the ocean and the water is clear, which makes it a good spot for snorkeling. It is usually not crowded, free of admission and has a lifeguard on duty. There are shady and grassy areas, shelters, picnic areas with grills, and has a great ocean view from the pool.
Kaimu Beach (Earth's newest black sand beach): A 20-25 minute leisurely drive down the coast from Hale Palama is abundant with natural beauty. The newest and most vibrant black sand beach is Kaimu Beach at the end of the drive - Kalapana-Kopoho Road (Rt. 137 at Rt. 130), near where the village of Kalapana was engulfed by the volcano a few years ago. The old Kaimu beach was probably one of the most famous black sand beaches in the world, but was covered by about 12' of lava between 1990 and 1992. Local residents have started replanting new coconut trees in old tree molds (when lava cools around a tree). New ferns, palms and other plants are starting to pop out of lava cracks. It is a must-see and is also located near the steam plume coming from the lava entering the ocean about a mile and a half away. Please Note: Due to strong current and unpredictable wave action swimming and even standing in ankle deep water is not advised.
