The Resort: Palmas Del Mar is Puerto Rico's fastest-growing, resort/residential community with over 3000 full-time residents and a thriving vacation ambiance. The property encompasses 2700 acres with 600 hectares designated as wildlife preserve areas and has miles of walking, jogging and golf cart paths. Palmas is located just 50 minutes from the fabulous shopping and 500 years of history of Old San Juan and one hour from El Yunque -the local Taíno name for the Caribbean National Rain Forest. Palmas alone can keep you busy! Several boat charters operate from the Palmas Marina offering half and full-day sails to Vieques and Culebra -the Spanish Virgin Islands. Between November and April, our wahoo (ono) run compares to that in the Bahamas, with fish available just 2 miles offshore. There are 2 championship golf courses designed by Rees Jones and Gary Player, a casino, equestrian center, SCUBA charters and more than two dozen tennis courts all within the resorts grounds.
Golf Lovers: The best golf in Puerto Rico: Palmas' two golf courses are considered among the finest in Puerto Rico. The oldest course - the Palm Course - was designed by Gary Player and was updated in 2002. The front nine and back nine are totally different with the front nine being narrow & very technical -an iron course- and the back nine huge, wide open and long, with many elevation changes. Some holes have truly spectacular views of the beach and coastline. The new course - Flamboyán - was designed by Rees Jones and finished in 2001. It is generally a long, difficult, wide open course with several long Par 4s and Par 5's that play directly into the teeth of what is usually a 15-20 mph breeze. I jokingly call #7 - a 561yard, slightly uphill Par 5 that plays directly into that wind- the only Par 6 in Puerto Rico. The back nine has another memorable Par 5, another 560-yarder which plays downwind and downhill.....it's fun to hit 280 yard drives here...
Car Rental: Do I rent a car or not?: Quite a few people ask me 'what's the best way to get to Palmas Del Mar from the San Juan Airport?' and 'do I need a car?' The answer is 'it depends if you want to just stay in Palmas the whole week or venture outside of Palmas to visit the rest of the Island', because financially, it's almost a toss-up between a car and an airport shuttle. Most shuttles that service Palmas Del Mar charge $20 a head to pick you up in San Juan International and take you to Palmas. Hence, a family of four should expect to pay $160.00 for the round trip to and from the airport to Palmas. But, a full-size rental car thru Orbitz or Travelocity will be $225 to $275 a week, plus it will give you flexibility to travel around the Island or make day trips to Old San Juan, the rain forest, the Bacardi distillery in Cataño and restaurants outside Palmas such as El Isleño in Cupey and El Tenedor in Juncos.
