The 12x24 deck overlooks the view. Have a warm soak in the spa and look out over the view after your day with the goats at the Carl Sandburg home in Hendersonville, taking in the Biltmore house in Asheville, or horsing around at FENCE in Landrum. You might prefer to stroll the charming shops and eateries right here in Saluda, or spend your days hiking here at Dark Corner or DuPont Forest or one of many other local outdoor recreational areas. From here, you are minutes from excellent kayaking, hiking, biking, fishing, and golf as well as shopping, antiques, excellent live theater, art galleries, historical sites dating back to the Revolutionary War, and many museums and folk artisans.

Hendersonville, NC is 10 mins away offering Carl Sandburg Home, Johnson Farm, Flatrock Playhouse, downtown shopping, fine dining, and galleries, as well as the annual Apple festival in Sept, weekly live music and street dances, and our personal favorite, the Gem and Mineral museum located in the basement of the Genealogical Society on Main st. Our Saluda favorites are the Coon Dog Day festival in July, Hartwood gallery, Ward's Grocery/Grill, the Wildflour Bakery, Purple Onion eatery, and Green River BBQ. In Landrum, SC also 10 mins away, there is FENCE, many shows, and the Blockhouse steeplechase for equine enthusiasts.

Further details about this cottage rental

New in Body, Rich in Family History: The first Bear's Den was originally home to my husband Carl's grandparents. Those of you who have already stayed with us here at Cottages of Dark Corner may have seen the original Bear's Den, much loved but long abandoned on the mountainside between the Pout House and Cynthia's Peak. We were able to save the Pout House, but the old Bear's Den was beyond our help, so we took it down to make way for a new Bear's Den. Many years ago, the cottage was named for its original occupant, TR Baumgartner, who was known in the family as 'a grouchy old bear.' A wooden plaque naming the house was made for him sometime (we think) in the 1960s and has found an honored place in the new home. Visit our website to learn more about our history here.
