They Say It’s the Best: Poipu

Everyone wants to be the best, but few can legitimately claim that distinction on their resume. Poipu, however, a sweet little spot on the south shore of Kauai, is home to what has been named the #1 beach in America by The Travel Channel – thus propelling it to the top of many travelers’ must-see lists.

If you find yourself interested in seeing what all the fanfare is about, set aside enough time to properly enjoy the highlights of this region. In addition to the famous stretch of shoreline shining brightly with accolades, there’s much more that makes Poipu completely irresistible.

Poipu Beach - the famous one - and its not-too-shabby neighboring beaches provide enough territory for exploration to keep you busy for days (in a leisurely way, of course). Snorkel from Lawai Beach, take a hike at Shipwreck Beach and escape the crowds by heading to Mahaulepu. Spouting Horn is a lava tube that shoots fountains of spray up to 50 feet in the air; it’s a dazzling natural landmark that you can’t miss, and if you’ve brought the kids along then stop by the aptly named Baby Beach for an uncomplicated day of frolicking.

Cooling trade winds and not much rain to speak of give Poipu an extra edge; temperatures average in the mid to upper 80’s in the summer and upper 70’s in winter, with evenings that will at most call for a light jacket. Golfing, horseback riding and strolling through the villages will further propel you into the realm of contentment, as will a rainbow of comfortable vacation condos and an array of exotic dining options that includes everything from elegant entrees to simple local fare.

Hawaii is pretty pleasing in general, but if you’re going to go, you might as well treat yourself to the best.
