What Makes Lake Santeetlah Awesome: Lake Santeetlah is a large, pristine lake with over 80% of its shoreline belonging to the federal government. What that means for the boater is simple: you are on a lake that's never crowded. The view of the mountains from Lake Santeetlah is breath-taking. The fishing is great. Walleye, bass, trout, and more varieties of fish than you can think of inhabit the lake. Lake Santeetlah is located in Graham County, Western North Carolina. The county is often called North Carolina's best kept secret. So much of it is part of the Nantahala National Forest, that you'll feel like you were the first to discover it. If you're into any water activities...fishing, boating, swimming, whitewater rafting, etc., this is absolutely the best place in the Smokies to be. Discover it...Lake Santeetlah!
Natural wonders and Things to do: Besides the beauty of Lake Santeetlah, you can spend weeks discovering the many, many trails located in this area. Hiking trails are everywhere. The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest takes you to the time of America's discovery, with trees that are just that old...and huge...Appalachia's virgin forest. The Cherohala Skyline is as high as the Blue Ridge Parkway...with fewer cars. The Nantahala River offers whitewater rafting, kayaking, etc. The many lakes and streams offer lots of fishing opportunities. A short drive to Deep Creek and you'll be tubing on a fun, fast creek. If you like waterfalls, this area has quite a few wonderful ones. Cheoah River, right down the way, has been opened for world class whitewater. Bring your camera. Around every bend is another glorious spot that Mother Nature created just for you.
Other Places to See and Things to do: You're right up against the Great Smokies National Park. The park offers many exciting things to do. You are near the Great Smokies Railroad; take a ride and enjoy the sights. In less than two hours, you can be at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville or Dollywood in Pigeon Forge. You're centrally located for either activity. Horseback riding, craft shop exploring, music venues, hiking, biking, are all nearby. You can attempt the Tail of the Dragon on your motorcycle, or have a relaxing picnic on a high elevation knoll. If you haven't seen Cherokee, it's less than an hour away...much less. Here, you can visit museums, gamble at Harrah's, see 'Unto These hills,' snoop into the many shops, and possibly even enjoy one of the many local festivals of the Native Americans. This area is what you came to the mountains for.
