Obey the Orders of Captain Cook
Vacations aren’t supposed to be intimidating, but the challenge of crafting the perfect getaway can sometimes be a little daunting. You want to get it right the first time – these are your hard-earned vacation days, after all – so toss those cares away and put your hopes in the hands of Captain Cook.
After settling on Hawaii (millions of tourists per year can’t be wrong), and even going so far as to hone in on the Big Island (again, in command of a very good reputation), what comes next? It would be difficult to go wrong even if you were to close your eyes and pick a random spot on the map, but if you’d like some guidance, try Captain Cook on for size. This destination has it all; legend, scenery and the opportunity to play in the sand and surf like you’re a carefree kid. One more attractive feature: tension can’t survive for long in the warm Hawaiian sun.
Get face to face with the tropical fish during a snorkeling session, hike through the lush rainforest, amble through a valley bursting with coffee plants and breathe deeply; you’ve finally arrived. Proximity to Pebble Beach, Volcanoes National Park and Kailua Kona are definite bonuses, but take a close look at your immediate surroundings first.
From your perfectly elevated vacation rental you’ll have an incredible view of Kealakekua Bay (also known as Pathway of the Gods), which means your private lanai might top your list of favorite spots in Hawaii. That’s not to say that golfing, sailing, shopping and traditional luaus won’t grab your attention at some point, but it will be a reflection of your tranquil mood that staying close to “home” will be the most appealing thing you can think of.
The southern Kona coastline is your gateway to vacation nirvana, so rise above the usual suggestions and go for a spot that will leave you anything but grounded.
