Kill Devil Hills Offers More Than Picture-Perfect Beaches

As with any other Outer Banks destination, the beaches reign supreme in Kill Devil Hills. However, this charming town is also brimming with historical significance and quaint boutiques, meaning there is always more to do than simply work on your tan (but only if you want to!).

Even if you aren’t staying in an oceanfront Kill Devil Hills vacation rental, it is easy to fill your getaway with hours of surfing, swimming, and sunbathing by finding the most convenience public beach access point near your home away from home. All you need to do is look for signs posted along Beach Road, and you can enjoy all of your favorite recreational activities in mere minutes.

However, keep in mind that you are in the Outer Banks, and that means you have access to soundside beaches, too. The water in the sound is usually calmer, warmer, and shallower than in the ocean, making it a great place for small children or a quiet afternoon away from the loud ocean waves.

While it would be easy to let the days pass you by as you relax on the beach, be sure to set aside a little time to visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which commemorates the location of the world’s first powered, sustained and controlled flight. You can also climb to the top of Big Kill Devil Hill to not only see the granite Wright Brothers’ Monument but to soak in the amazing views of Kill Devil Hills.

Still looking to round out your itinerary? There is an excellent bike path on the soundside of Kill Devil Hills and it features some amazing views all the way to Kitty Hawk. However, if you want to take a short break from all of the active pursuits, get in a little retail therapy by visiting some of the galleries and shops off of the Bypass (U.S. Hwy. 158) and Beach Road (N.C. Hwy 12).
