Oahu has its pockets of energy and popularity, but there are just as many quiet spots that will handily reward you with the ultimate vacation. Try Hauula for example; you’ve probably never heard of it, but that doesn’t mean it won’t make you redefine your vacation expectations from now on.

Oahu’s North Shore is primarily known as a surfer’s paradise, but even those who fear barrels and riptides will find this a welcoming place to be. Leave the big waves to the professionals and enjoy the peaceful parts – Hauula (especially during the summer) is a prime snorkeling spot thanks to a large healthy coral reef and an ample shallow area.

Discovering traditional Hawaii is a breeze here; the pace of life is slow and steady, the people are friendly, and nature-oriented experiences dominate. Kayaking, horseback riding and hiking the Hauula Loop Trail are all satisfying experiences that will acquaint you with the real Oahu.

You’re not finished yet; visit Sacred Falls State Park, the towns of Punaluu and Laie, and the Polynesian Cultural Center, which puts on a spectacular luau. Traditional, artsy and definitely more peaceful than the average modern vacation, a jaunt to Hauula will leave you refreshed while restoring your faith in the idea that not every beautiful place has been overrun with tourists.
