North Captiva Island is Truly Captivating

You’ve heard of Sanibel & Captiva and probably consider it quite a treat to travel from mainland Florida to a sort-of-secret island paradise that’s a step removed from the typical experience. Did you know, however, that you can go even farther?

North Captiva Island is small and cozy, just a half mile wide and four miles long. You have to take a ferry to reach it so it attracts a certain kind of traveler, and not only is there an absence of traffic jams, there isn’t a single car or paved road to dampen Mother Nature’s original intentions for what Florida should be.

Bring your binoculars, your comfy walking shoes, your camera and your wild streak, because this vacation will satisfy the urges to wander and explore that you’ve been tempering for so long.

The state land preserve encompasses much of the island and is your best bet for revealing egrets, manatees, pelicans and more. The white sandy beaches are truly immaculate, and getting around is done by strolling or hopping on to a golf cart. The pace is slow and the peaceful scenes are endless, and even though you’re removed from the hubbub you won’t be isolated. Try feeling cut off when you have a vacation home packed with amenities – everything from a TV to a hairdryer, a barbeque grill to a hot tub.
