Mahone Bay Village nature, architecture, restaurants, arts and shops are simply enchanting. Nearby busy Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a mini-San Francisco, with steep streets, Victorian homes, tall ships - including the famous racing schooner 'Bluenose,' a wonderful fisheries museum and a unique harbor-view golf course. Chester, the nearby village that reminds us of Martha's Vineyard where our folks have a home (but without the crowds), has another ocean-front golf course. Nearby Blue Rocks and Stonehurst fishing villages attract artists and photographers for the rocky harbors and stunning sunsets. Carter Beach, the natural treasure with Caribbean-like clear blue waters, is uncrowded in the extreme. A perfect picnic spot! World-famous Peggy's Cove lighthouse is 50 min away. With the large pier and unique view that Loon Lodge enjoys in this special community, we think that it is one of the outstanding vacation values in all of Nova Scotia. If you are an American traveler, we assure you that a comparable home, pier and view in a comparable premier American seaside community would cost you multiples of what we ask for Loon Lodge rentals. Call us and we'll answer all your questions about the house, the community of Mahone Bay and the wonderful things to see and do on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. We have more photos (hundreds) that we can send of the house and furnishings, the harbor and pier out front, the boat houses, schooners and sea islands further out the harbor, and the wonderful homes, galleries, and boutiques of Mahone Bay village, as well as nearby Lunenburg and Chester. Call us!
  • We keep Loon Lodge thoughtfully stocked so you can fly, drive or boat here and be comfortable as soon as you arrive. Also, if you have any special needs, let us know in advance and we'll try to accommodate you. It's even possible to pre-arrange babysitting, sailing lessons/cruises, deep sea fishing, adventure trips, golf dates, harbor/kayak/ birding tours, horseback riding and classes in local arts/crafts. A small but well-stocked village supermarket, gourmet farmers market, excellent bread bakery, pizza parlor, pharmacy, liquor store, bank, visitor center and Wi-Fi Internet cafe are all a 1 min. drive, 5 min. bike ride or a 10-20 minute walk around the harbor. We often shop, go for dinner, breakfast, ice cream, the pub, biscuits at the Wi-Fi cafe/bookstore or yacht visiting by using the red inflatable dinghy, canoe or new kayaks, as it only takes 10 minutes to row across the harbor. Land on the small beach near the village markets or tie up at the Pub wharf. Fun!

Further details about this house rental

Loon Lodge and Mahone Bay Village are perfect for couples and families. Swim from your private pier float or launch the Lodge boats to shop, dine or tour the harbor's islands, beaches & yacht fleet. Warm-water beaches are just a short pedal or drive away. The village also has a large, life-guarded pool (with swimming lessons) & public tennis courts. Sailing instructions & sea island sail cruises on 15' and 25' sailboats can be booked just up the road. Day/sunset harbor cruises and whale/puffin watching on a 36' lobster boat can be arranged at the town wharf with fully-licensed Captain Chris and his wife, Gretchen. Larger sea kayak rentals, lessons and guided tours can be arranged right across the harbor. Birding tours and advice available at the fascinating village Birding Store, the only such store in Nova Scotia. Or you can just sit on the porch or pier for hours watching the harbor activities, wildlife, sunrises and sunsets. The kitchen hummigbird feeder is a morning delight!

Dramatic, ocean-front golf courses are in nearby Lunenburg and Chester. Tall ship day trips, scuba diving, whale watching, sea cave boat trips, deep-sea fishing and carriage rides can be arranged in Lunenburg. Horseback riding and horse boarding is available in Chester. Superb kayak water trails as well as hiking & cycling trails pervade the province, including one along the ridge behind the Lodge. The annual Mahone Bay Classic Boat Festival events, including fireworks, boat races, and pirate ship-burning re-enactments are right off the Lodge private pier. Superb bird-watching right from the Lodge pier for loons, bald eagles, great blue herons, ospreys, cormorants, kingfishers, hawks and diving ducks. Hummingbirds visit the kitchen window feeder every day. Swim/tube from the 'secret' little nearby beaches with warmer ocean waters that are shallow enough for small children and have lovely views of the sea islands, harbor, Shaker-like farms and even a pond with sea otters in it!

Hirtle Beach, very popular with surfers and boogie boarders, is 20 mins. away. Returning from Hirtle, visit the exciting Ovens sea caves & the Nantucket-like village of Kingsburg, or cross the LaHavre River on the cable car ferry to lunch at the historic riverfront La Havre Bakery. Along the way, sample the infinite variety of local folk art at the many roadside small galleries. The lush Annapolis Valley, a New England-like area of farms & adorable villages is 45 mins. away. The hiking trails along the Bay of Fundy coast are an hour away and are spectacular, particularly the trail out to Cape Split. The rocky seascapes of Blue Rocks village, mentioned above, are only 20 mins. away and, being near the open Atlantic, are quite exciting on a windy day. Famous Cape Breton National Highlands, at the northeastern tip of Nova Scotia is one of North America's great natural wonders. And, of course, the 100's of miles of quiet water-side lanes are some of the loveliest drives in North America.

Other Activities: Canoe/kayaking/sailing, waterfront drives/cycling/walking, tall ships, art galeries, museums, Canadian sunsets
